Menopause Already?According to experts, young women in early menopause are under-diagnosed. Studies show 1 percent of women under the age of 40 and up to 5 percent under the age of 45 experience premature menopause. It is often overlooked by doctors because it's many symptoms can easily be mistaken for other conditions. Symptoms of menopause include: missed periods, hot flashes, night sweats, sleeping problems, changes in mood and weight gain. If you are having menopausal symptoms, your doctor may order blood tests to help determine what exactly is going on and to rule out any other issues. Two of the most commonly ordered blood tests are FSH-Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Estradiol (E2). FSH is considered the key test to determine whether or not you are in menopause. FSH levels rise when your ovaries stop producing enough estrogen. High FSH levels are indicative that your body is entering menopause. When your ovaries stop working, your Estradiol levels drop. Low Estradiol levels can also be caused by excessive exercise, low body fat and diminished ovarian reserve. Male Menopause? Most people don't know, but just like women men go through their own version of menopause also known as "andropause". It is caused by a decrease in testosterone levels. As men age their testosterone levels drop on average 1% per year after the age of 30. Unlike women, men are still able to have kids even into their 90's! Symptoms of male menopause may include: fatigue, weakness, depression, and sexual problems, to name a few. The only way to detect male menopause (low testosterone) is through a blood test.
