In another study called the PROCARDIS Consortium at the University of Oxford, UK studied 15,937 people. 7,991 people had heart disease before age 66 and 7,946 people did not have heart disease. They found that in all of these people 1 out of 6 people of European descent carried variants associated with high Lp(a). This means they had a "genetic" predisposition. What that means is you can eat correctly, exercise heavily, and have no risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure or smoking and still go on to have a cardiac event.

In a women's Health Study, carriers of an apolipoprotein (a) variant had elevated Lp(a), doubled cardiovascular risk, and appeared to benefit more from aspirin that non-carriers. (Chasman, DI., Shiffman, D., et. al )
Diets high in unsaturated fat increased Lp(a) levels less than diets rich in carbohydrate or protein with greater changes in blacks than whites. Research suggests that substitutions with dietary mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids in healthy diets may be preferable over protein or carbohydrates with regards to Lp(a).
Bottom line is you really have to get this blood test! Its cheap and you can just get it yourself and if your Lp(a) is high.......get into medical care immediately to fix this genetic risk for heart attack. Remember, you don't know unless you test!
