Many of you have asked me "What is the difference between a NMR Lipoprofile and a Lipid Profile?"
Which test should I have?
To understand what would be best for you, understanding cholesterol is very important.
Lipids are fats and non-fats that are a source of energy for the cells in our body. Lipoprotein particles transport two lipids, cholesterol and triglycerides, through the blood stream. The particles are a combination of protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, and phospholipids. Lipoproteins are classified in three categories: High-density lipoprotein (HDL); low-density lipoprotein (LDL); and, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL).
HDL is considered "good cholesterol" as it transports to the liver for removal and cleans up other extra cholesterol. LDL is considered "bad cholesterol" because it leaves extra cholesterol behind in blood vessel walls. VLDL contains the most triglycerides. The culprit for wall attachment of cholesterol is the particle number of LDL, not the cholesterol itself.
Lipid profiles are designed to test the number of lipoprotein particles in a body's system. The CardioPlus profile offered by DirectLabs contains a lipid profile, which tests the HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, as well as your metabolic system.
NMR Profile is slightly different in that it not only provides direct measurement of the number but also the size of particles as well as HDL and VLDL subclasses. This is done through nuclear magnetic resonance, kind of a like an MRI of cholesterol.
Lipid profiles are still a standard in evaluating cholesterol in the medical community; however, for further analysis, the NMR has become a very effective tool.
