Dr. Kenneth L. Willeford M.D.
Dr. Willeford obtained his degree in physics, and started his career as a research physicist. He then went on to complete medical school, and obtained Board Certification in Anesthesiology. Dr. Willeford relocated from Sacramento, California University of Davis Medical Center to developed the Rural Coastal Community Brunswick Hospital Department of Anesthesia, and was the 1st Anesthesiologist in 1993! Dr. Willeford worked with nurse anesthetists, and hospital staff to improve morbidity and mortality during surgical and hospital events. Dr. Willeford functioned as the Department Chairman of Anesthesia, as well as served as Chief of Staff and developed In-Patient Pain Management for over a decade before he specialized in out-patient Interventional Pain Management.
Dr. Willeford founded the first Brunswick County Interventional Pain Management Facility in 2005 to address the rural deficit to appropriate pain management and opioid care. In 2013, he founded the Addiction Medicine Clinic to address the addiction opioid epidemic. Dr. Willeford worked to educate colleagues and mid-level providers regarding the long term consequences of misdiagnosing, and the over- prescribing of narcotics and addiction consequences. Dr. Willeford is leading the health initiatives in Brunswick County by partnering with Mental Health, Addiction Task Force, and Brunswick County Government in order to utilize technology to increase access to Addiction Care and Recovery Programs within Brunswick County.
Dr. Willeford served as The Brunswick Community Hospital Director of Outpatient Cardiac Rehab. This community initiative was focused on improving outcome measures for patients dealing with limited access to heart & vascular centers, cardiologists, heart surgeons and high level of specialization. Today the Brunswick rural community is one of the most sought after places to live settled between MUSC and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Today, our community hospital is a state-of-the-art medical facility that is thriving economically serving locals and tourists from all over the world!
