As a mother I am always looking for ways to slip more veggies and fruit into Thanksgiving Dinners. This year my younger kids really liked my Cranberry Relish with pears and apples!
One reason cranberries are so good for children is because of the cavity protection! Streptococcus mutans is a bacteria that grows on the teeth and cranberries are very effective in the prevention of cavities! Another great protection is in the fight against urinary tract infections.
Studies have suggested that the active compounds in cranberry juice are not destroyed by the digestive system after people drink them, but instead work to fight against bacteria, including E. coli. This latest study, presented at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, affirms that and provides evidence of the medicinal value of cranberries. within eight hours of drinking cranberry juice, the juice could help prevent bacteria from developing into an infection in the urinary tract.
Cranberries contain stroke and cardiovascular disease-preventing compounds that discourage cholesterol from forming in the heart and blood vessels. They are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients that give them their red color! Research has reported the antioxidant polyphenols in cranberries is protective against breast cancer. One serving will give you 24% of your daily value of Vitamin C and Vitamin E! The high quality fiber in cranberries will keep the large colon moving the holiday food out of the body!
PATIENTS on certain medications such as anticoagulants or are diagnosed with urinary tract stones should limit their intake of cranberries because of the oxalic acid. People with a medical diagnosis of diabetes need to be careful as well because cranberries contain fructose and may be a challenge to maintaining proper blood sugar control in some individuals.
