 Sunscreens in the U.S. aren't always safe or effective. They can contain harmful chemicals or claim to have crazy-high misleading SPF ratings. A new proposal from the Food and Drug Administration might finally give consumers the power to choose safer sunscreens for their families. The new rules would force sunscreen and chemical manufacturers to perform tests to show chemicals in sunscreen are safe. A 2019 EWG analysis found that two out of three sunscreens in our annual Guide to Sunscreens contained oxybenzone, a potentially hormone-disrupting chemical. The FDA proposal would also introduce new testing requirements to ensure better UV protection and cap SPF claims at 60+. Sky-high SPFs don't actually offer significantly better protection and can lull users into a false sense of security, putting them at greater risk for skin damage or cancer.
