Hormones In Your Antibacterial Soaps.....FDA Raises Their Voice

The FDA has issued a final ruling and has established that over-the-counter (OTC) consumer antiseptic wash products containing certain active ingredients can no longer be marketed.

Why?

There are a number of reasons but one immediate reason is the toxic chemicals Triclosan and triclocarban that are in the products.. These two chemicals are used in products intended to reduce or prevent bacterial contamination. They are added to antibacterial soaps and body washes, toothpastes, and even cosmetics. 

Here is the problem: 

Some short-term animal studies have shown that exposure to high doses of triclosan is associated with a decrease in the levels of some thyroid hormones. Anyone with a thyroid diagnosis getting exposed to Triclosan?

• Other studies have raised the possibility that exposure to triclosan contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics. 
• There are other ongoing studies that involve the safety of triclosan. One is a study investigating the potential of developing skin cancer after a long-term exposure to triclosan in animals.
• Here is a perfect example of marketing getting way out ahead of the science. In 1997 the FDA allowed triclosan in Colgate Total toothpaste for gingivitis.
  
• Today we have safer alternatives like CoQ10 to prevent gingivitis. Gingival biopsies have revealed subnormal tissue levels of CoQ10 in 60% – 96% of patients with periodontal disease. These findings suggest that periodontal disease is frequently associated with CoQ10 deficiency. Simply taking CoQ10 supplementation instead of toxic toothpaste would be far better for patients. I know people are afraid of germs. and of getting sick but as this FDA announcement points out —there is NO EVIDENCE that anti=microbials added to soap decrease infections compared to regular soap and water.  

The final FDA rule is that companies will no longer be able to market antibacterial washes with these ingredients because the FDA cannot demonstrate that the ingredients are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections.
