The community-based skin cancer prevention trial conducted by Green et. al in the subtropical region of Nambour, Queensland, Australia, provided evidence from a randomized controlled trial that regular use of sunscreen prevents melanoma. Evidence from randomized controlled trials demonstrated that regular sunscreen use prevents cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. One of the absolute best sunscreen I recommend for males and females is Sunforgettable Mineral Sunscreen. My son loves it because it isn't greasy, or have any color and it stays on in the water for 80 minutes and ITS EASY! Perfect for his surfing passion! A tan, whether you get it on the beach, in a tanning bed, or through incidental exposure, is bad news, any way you acquire it. Tans are caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have one, you’ve sustained skin cell damage. No matter what you may hear at tanning salons, the cumulative damage caused by UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots, and more), as well as skin cancer. In fact, people who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent according to the skin cancer foundation. Many people are fooled into believing they look "better" with a tan. My patients actually tell me they were taught to believe if they are not burning they do not have to worry. I live on the Coast in SC where it is very hot and I teach my patients that the UVA rays in tanning beds are mutagenic and most certainly do affect the DNA of squamous and basil cells of the skin. Prolonged exposure to UV light either from the sun or tanning beds is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer. I have daughters who I have educated to continuously spread the word to their college girl friends that indoor tanning beds increase melanoma risk by 75%. If you live in very hot or sunny climates or are planning a trip or vacation to the beach here are my recommendations to cover up that beautiful skin and prevent deadly melanoma or squamous/basil skin cancer.
