As a Nurse Practitioner one of the most common concerns patients consult with me about is FATIGUE. Fatigue can be caused from many factors including prescriptive and over-the-counter medications.
Fatigue can be caused by poor nutrition. Poor nutrition is caused from poor quality food or small intestinal issues such as bacterial overgrowth or inflammation. Inflammation leads to poor absorption of micro nutrients and bacterial overgrowth such as candida. Fatigue can be due to gluten intolerance or food allergies or even non-gluten celiac disease. Fatigue can also be caused from infection, low thyroid levels, poor adrenal health, low magnesium, or even cardiac disease. All Anemia's need to be ruled out and all blood disorders need to be checked out with basic routine labs. Fatigue can be something serious that you need specialized care or it can something as simple as changing your diet and cleaning up you gut. One of the most tragic outcomes is having un-diagnosed nutrient deficiencies due to gut issues that could have been reversed if diagnosed early. A simple copper or magnesium or B12 deficiency can cause a very serious disease called neuropathy.
Non- Gluten Celiac Disease is a very complicated disorder and this is one disease that once cured or correctly diagnosed can literally reverse many other diseases. Make sure you work with a healthcare provider that understands the very diverse and complex issues revolving around the diagnosis of non gluten celiac disease.
Another nutritional disorder that can cause severe fatigue is called SIBO which is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This disorder typically presents with a set of nutrients that are ALL low across the board. I typically see all heavy metals elevated due to detoxification pathways not working well due to the low minerals. One quick strategy I recommend while you are working on the multi-factorial issues that surround fatigue and working on a comprehensive care plan with your healthcare provider, is to supplement with a product I really like from Pure Encapsulations called Anti-Fatigue Complex. Click Here for the product.
I like this product because it immediately starts to address the nutritional concerns we typically see when people start to tell us they feel tired all the time. It is usually not you but a deficiency in KEY nutrients that run certain enzyme pathways that you are currently NOT doing.
If critical pathways are not working the result is 100% Fatigue, even if you are in perfect health. For instance the acetyl-l-carnitine is in the product because it is a neurotransmitter function and what it does is relieve mental fatigue, promote memory, support mental clarity and emotional well-being. Ashwagandha, another ingredient in the product has been shown to promote energy, vitality and immune defense in animal models. There are many other evidenced-based ingredients that all help relieve the symptom of fatigue. So don't guess, get on products that are formulated for your symptoms. This is NOT the only answer but it is one of the answers! These nutrients must be present to run basic biochemistry pathways in your body. The nutrients in this supplement is designed to promote mental clarity, energy metabolism, immune support and antioxidant defense to relieve occasional mental and physical fatigue. Try a bottle or two while you are working with someone who can measure what is really going on biochemically and reviewing your diet and prescriptions. There is a million and one reasons someone is fatigue but lets not miss the basics of nutrient deficiency. At the very least take a formula like Anti-Fatigue Complex while you are working it all out! A medical check-up with routine labs is a good idea as early disease is easier to treat than something that has gone on for too long! Blessings, Dr. Carly
