About a year ago Joshua broke his leg while at soccer practice. Sine the fall feast are coming up this week it makes me think about how blessed we all are to have children in our lives for they are our countries future! From the beauty of conception to the miracle of watching them grow we all need to thank God daily for the Blessing of Children.
Children's bones contain growth plates where new bone cells are quickly dividing. Pediatric orthopedics is its own specialty because children have bones that are different from adults. The night Joshua broke his tibia at soccer practice (well technically practice hadn't started yet and he was playing with older boys, which is another blog regarding safety and age groups!) Ken & I like any parent were devastated and as medical providers thoughts raced through our heads. Pain management, growth plates, surgery, next week, school......
As we settled into our new life with Joshua in a wheelchair for a few weeks, diet became critical for this is the only way to heal bones. The best way to heal and repair bones is eating silica rich foods such as cucumber, sprouts, green vegetables and root vegetables. Raw desserts made with cacao, almonds, walnuts, hemp or chia seeds provide the body with magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin C and protein.
Joshua loved drinking fresh organic juice made from apples, carrots, squash, honey, grapes and leafy greens all mixed with a nut milk. This bone healing juice flooded his body with phytonutrients, C, E, K, B vitamins, and zeaxanthins.
Well it was a long recovery time but we all survived! Joshua embraced reading books, music and video games with his big brother, who I must say was the key to helping us with Joshua's anger over immobility, and boredom! The day came when Joshua had to give up the wheelchair and hop to begin weight bearing. This task was met with extreme fear for the memory of pain was alive and well. Again turning to the older kids for Rehab play was the only choice that worked. All of us adults could not get him to try and walk. I think we found a new way to rehab kids........bring the older boys in on the treatment plans. Play Therapy has a new role in orthopedic traumas!
